Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding

This is a restrictive weight loss procedure in which a silicone band is placed around the stomach to create a small upper stomach pouch. The band acts as a funnel to delay the emptying of food into the lower stomach, thus restricting the amount of food that can be ingested and helps the patient to feel full for a longer period of time. The band is connected by soft tubing to an injection port placed in the abdomen under the skin. Adjustments are made to the band by a healthcare professional. This is done by injecting saline into the port to provide more restriction. The saline can also be removed from the band should there be a need to do so. Success with the Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band is dependent on follow-up for band adjustments. This procedure is done laparoscopically (with 5-6 small incisions) so that patients generally recover more quickly than with an open surgery.
