Kumaran Chinnappan, M.D. joins St. Alexius NewStart having completed a Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopy and Bariatric Surgery with Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. He has performed over 200 laparoscopic bariatric surgeries.

Dr. Kumaran graduated from University of Madras, Madras Medical College in Chennai, India in 1994. After graduation, Dr. Kumaran pursued advanced surgical training in India, UK and Singapore. He also served as a Chief Resident at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center, New York affiliated to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He has made many presentations at both national and international surgical meetings. He was awarded the SLS Outstanding Laparoendoscopic Resident Award by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) and Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, London, UK.

Dr. Kumaran is married and has two children. His interests include basketball and tennis.
